Beaches

Hummingbird Hideaway is 1.7 km from the sea. You will find some nice beaches in the area. The best beaches are found in Hopkins which can easily be reached by bicycle. From being a small fishing village, Hopkins has more and more been discovered by the tourists. Today you will find several restaurants and bars around the beach and if you happen to be in Hopkins during the evening of full moon you can visit ”Windchief´s” Full Moon Party at the beach where both locals and tourists choose to leisure.

Diving

Belize is a paradise for divers. With the 2:nd largest coral reef in the world just outsider the coast, the opportunities for diving in the area are excellent. The local diving company in Sittee River Village is owned and run by a British couple and is located just 300 meters from Hummingbird Hideaway.

Fishing

Belize offers great opportunities for fishing. You can fish in the river just 30 meters from the house, but the best fishing you will of course find out on the sea. Marlin, Baracuda and Snapper are some of the species you will find in Belize. We can provide boats for fishing and will gladly help you with arranging your fishing trip.

Birding

Belize has fantastic bird life. Expect to wake up early in the morning to the intensive sound of all the colourful birds and parrots in the jungle. (Ear plugs for the sensitive late sleepers are recommended). It is said that there are almost 600 species of birds in Belize. Among the birds to be found in Belize can be mentioned Scarlett Macaw, the great Curassow, the Hummingbird and of course the Toucan.

Maya Mountain Kayaking

Kayak down the beautiful rainforest river with a Maya indian as your guide. The tour with kayak takes you into the rainforest and down some of the smaller waterfalls along the river. The tour takes a full day and the going rate (February 2006) is USD 60/person. For reservations or questions send an e-mail to rinus@starband.net. Cocksomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

About 12 km from Hummingbird Hideaway is the village of the Maya Center, where a track goes 10 km west into the Cocksomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (sometimes called the Jaguar Reserve). The rain Forest is home to a large percentage of Belize´s animal and plant species. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded here including Scarlett macaw, the great curassow and of course the toucan. Among other animals living here are jaguars, pumas, ocelos, tapirs, boa constrictors and many more. You will probably get the most out of your hiking experience if you find yourself a guide in the Maya-center. If you are open for more adventure and have a few days to spend you can walk all the way up to Victoria Peak which is the 2:nd largest mountain in Belize and reach the hight of 1120 meters. For this challenge you will need to find a guide at the Maya Center or contact Maya Guide Adventures.

Guided tours

You will find a wide selection of guided tours arranged by any of the nereby lodges Hamanasi, Belizian Dreams or Jaguar Reef. The guideded tours are usually half-day or 1-day tours and include activities such as canoeing on Sittee River, birding, mayan ruin tours, rainforest hikes, trekking, Whale shark diving, caving, fly fishing, kayaking etc.

Visit the cayes

Outside the coast you will find many small islands, so called cayes (pronounced “keys”). If you have time enough during your stay in Belize you can spend a few days at any of the nearby cayes. Glover´s Reef and Tobacco Caye are among the more famous and interesting cayes close to Hummingbird Hideaway. Tobacco Caye is a smaller island and the boats to this caye departs from Dangriga. Glover´s Reef is a larger island and you will reach the island by boat from Sittee River Village.

Exploring Sittee River

Rent a canoe and explore Sittee River on your own or join an organized canoe tour with guide. Enjoy the beautiful nature along the river and see the flowers, mangroves, birds, crocodiles and other animals. Going into the narrow Boom Creek gives an exciting nature experience. Organised night tours with canoe are also available.

Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Mayflower Bocawina National Park is an 7000-acre protected National Park. Except for old Maya remains you will find hiking trails in the jungle and also water falls along some of the trails. As an example you can follow the Bocawina trail for a fairly easy 30-minute walk to the lower Bocawina Water Fall.
